< back

Andrew Bell is the Creative Technologist at Mill NY. His technological expertise joins forces with a roster of design and storytelling talent to spread award-winning Mill visuals to interactive environments and the world beyond TV.

Prior to joining The Mill, Bell was a Visual Architect at The Barbarian Group where he led the shop's efforts on the acclaimed Augmented Reality issue of Esquire (Dec. '09) featuring Robert Downey Jr. The project marked the first issue of a major magazine to integrate AR with editorial content. Bell also co-created the music visualizer Magnetosphere that now lives in iTunes—Apple's world-class media player for Mac and PC.

In addition to his commercial projects, Bell has enjoyed considerable success in the art realm. He was a collaborator on an installation for McLeod Residence Seattle focusing on the theme of magnetism and featuring biomimetic paper butterflies. Bell also collaborated with director Laurent Briet on Mellowdrone's "Fashionably Uninvited" music video, creating the algorithms and imagery driving a computer-generated wall of photographs. Director Joel Peissig put Bell's talents to use to create the generative visuals for "The Dumbing Down of Love" promo for Frou Frou, which won the Audience Choice Award at RESFest. Bell is also the lead architect of the popular open source project Cinder, which is rapidly becoming the preeminent tool for code-based artists working in the C++ programming language (http://libcinder.org).

Before joining The Barbarian Group, Bell spent five years in Los Angeles working for Method Studios as a Technical Director. His commercial highlights include work on the VES-winning Sears "Arboretum," and Budweiser's "The Wave," a Super Bowl spot for which Bell created a pipeline allowing artists to control the motion of 90,000 virtual football fans. A host of additional award-winning work rounds out his accomplishments at Method.
